I'M MAD HUNGRY

Just a Chinese-Canadian sharing what I cook and where I eat. I LOVE food. I'm always looking for new recipes, reading cookbooks, watching all types of cooking tutorials on youtube, and spending loads of time at the grocery store.

  • More Soondubu
This soft tofu soup is easy to make and it’s delicious. Bulked it up with shrimp and shiitake mushrooms. I sliced up the kelp I used for the soup base and tossed it with some sesame oil and made a little salad.

  • Shrimp Sandwich for Lunch
Layered the bun with ham, prosciutto, shrimp, and shaved parmesan. And I spread some spicy asiago dip on the top bun. The shrimp was just pan fried with garlic salt and pepper.

  • Quick Fried Rice
I had some left over plain rice in the fridge and decided to fry it up with some kind mushrooms, spam, and shrimp. I seasoned it with soy sauce and shallot sauce. It was a delicious lunch.

  • Spam and Shrimp Soondubu
I’m so addicted to soondubu, I tried making it at home. I looked up the recipe on  Maangchi, and it seemed quite simple. The stock is flavoured with dreid kelp, anchovies, garlic, shiitake mushrooms, fish sauce, and red pepper flakes.

  • Hutches Harbour Front
325 Bay St N, Hamilton
My friend and I came here for lunch and I got their fish and chips. The fish was piping hot, delicious, and crispy. They have packets of tar tar sauce for the fish, oh god, that was goo too. They loaded the plate with fries too, but when I got to it they were kinda soggy. I’m just a slow eater.

  • Homemade Dumplings
Aren’t these the cutest. I didn’t make them, a friend of a friend did though! These are filled with pork and parsley. I just cooked them in a pan with half an inch of water, then pan fried them with oil to brown them for the crunch.

  • Bernardino’s Deli

    127 Plaines Road West, Burlington

My friend and I stopped by here to grab a quick lunch before heading off to IKEA. We picked up our lunch at the deli, and I had no idea that there was a restaurant attached to it until my friend pointed it out. I got the Salmon and the Greek salad. The salmon was either grilled or pan fried, then served cold with a topping of tomatoes and cucumbers, seasoned with parsley. It was really good! The Greek salad on the other hand, it was seasoned well, but the ingredients seemed a bit soggy.

I read a few terrible reviews for the restaurant attached to the deli. Maybe just stick to the deli!

  • Alirang Korean Restaurant

    354 Main Street West, Hamilton

The first soup is called Gamjatang, pork bone soup. Easily my favourite Korean soup. This soup was different though, good different. I’ve never had pork bone soup with such an intense and strong pork bone taste. It had a fantastic balance of spice and meat flavour. YUM.

The second soup is Seafood Soondubu, which is a spicy soft tofu soup. All the seafood made it sweet and delicious. The stock was definitely strong and flavourful.

All you need for the stock is dried kelp, dried anchovies, garlic, and dried shitake mushrooms. To add spice, you just need the hot pepper flakes. Add whatever you like to bulk it up. The main ones are seafood, beef, curry, and chicken.
